Former Lottery Pick and Four-time All-Star Kemba Walker Announces Retirement
In a heartfelt announcement that resonates deeply within the NBA community, Kemba Walker, a former lottery pick and four-time All-Star, has officially retired from professional basketball. Walker, who spent 12 impactful seasons in the NBA, confirmed his decision on Tuesday, ending a remarkable journey on the court and beginning a new chapter focused on coaching and player enhancement.
Walker’s illustrious career began when he was selected as the ninth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats, now known as the Charlotte Hornets. Over the course of his career, he played for four different franchises and left an indelible mark at each stop. Walker’s time with the Hornets was particularly noteworthy; he made three All-Star appearances and earned a spot on the All-NBA Second Team, solidifying his status as one of the premier guards in the league.
Reflecting on his initial years in the NBA, Walker shared, "Tough days, f---ing tough days, I can't even lie. Excuse my language. It was difficult. I couldn't see myself just being on another team. It was just hard. That's all I've known was Charlotte. Definitely some tough times. I had a feeling that I wasn't going to get the offer that I wanted, and maybe not close to it, because of cap space."
His basketball journey, however, began well before the NBA. Walker led the UConn Huskies to an NCAA title in 2011, averaging an impressive 23.5 points per game that season. His memorable game-winning shot to beat Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Big East Tournament remains etched in the minds of college basketball fans.
After his successful stint with Charlotte, Walker joined the Boston Celtics in a sign-and-trade deal in the summer of 2019, a move that saw Terry Rozier head to the Hornets. His first season with the Celtics was nothing short of spectacular; he earned another All-Star selection and helped the team reach the Eastern Conference Finals in the NBA bubble. Yet, his time with Boston was marred by recurring knee soreness and other health issues that ultimately hindered his performance.
Walker’s career also included brief periods with the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks before he concluded his NBA journey in 2023. Despite his struggles with injuries, Walker's career averages of 19.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists over 750 career games speak volumes about his consistency and talent on the court.
Walker even took his talents overseas for a season, playing for AS Monaco, demonstrating his continued passion for the game even as his NBA opportunities waned.
Now, as he transitions from playing to coaching, Walker will be joining the Charlotte Hornets' staff as a player enhancement coach under new head coach Charles Lee. While he steps away from the court as a player, Walker made it clear that he would remain closely connected to the sport he loves. "Basketball will forever be a part of my life so this isn't goodbye. I'm excited for what's next," he noted, hinting at a future embedded in the game, albeit in a different role.
