Patty Mills Signs One-Year Deal with Utah Jazz
Veteran point guard Patty Mills has agreed to a one-year contract with the Utah Jazz, marking his 16th season in the NBA. The deal, fully guaranteed, will see Mills earn $3.3 million for the upcoming season.
At 36, Mills brings a wealth of experience to a Jazz team eager to return to playoff contention. Having been drafted in the second round by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2009, Mills has had a storied career, playing for notable franchises such as the San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks, and Miami Heat. His tenure with the Spurs includes winning an NBA championship in 2014.
Internationally, Mills has also showcased his talent, playing in leagues in China and Australia. Recently, he represented Australia in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he averaged an impressive 16.5 points per game. Despite his efforts, Australia was knocked out in the quarterfinals by Serbia, led by star Nikola Jokic.
The Utah Jazz are coming off a challenging season, finishing with a 31-51 record. With aspirations to improve their standings, the Jazz are banking on a mix of veteran leadership and youthful energy. Keyonte George is anticipated to take on the starting point guard role, with Collin Sexton starting alongside him. Jordan Clarkson, known for his scoring ability, remains the team’s sixth man. The Jazz have also fortified their roster by signing Johnny Juzang and Svi Mykhailiuk and extending Lauri Markkanen’s contract.
Although Mills is not expected to start, his role will be pivotal. Providing instant offense off the bench, his versatility will be a significant asset both on and off the court. The Jazz are hopeful that Mills' presence will offer invaluable experience and mentorship for their younger players.
With the blend of seasoned veterans and promising young talent, the Jazz are optimistic about their prospects in the upcoming season. Mills, with his extensive experience and proven track record, is expected to play a critical role in their quest for playoff success.
