Stroud Leads Texans into Promising New Season
As the Houston Texans gear up for the start of another NFL season, all eyes are on their star quarterback, C.J. Stroud. The No. 2 overall pick has rapidly ascended the ranks, establishing himself as the face of the franchise and one of the league's most promising young talents. Entering his second training camp, Stroud’s confidence is palpable.
"Definitely a little more confident just knowing how training camp works, the reps I'll take," Stroud remarked. His transition from his rookie year, where uncertainty was a constant companion, to his role as the undisputed starting quarterback has been nothing short of remarkable. "Going with the ones. Last year, I really didn't know that until the very beginning of the regular season," he added.
The previous season saw Stroud lead the Texans to an AFC South title and their first playoff victory in years. In doing so, he set franchise records for passing yards, touchdowns, completions, and attempts, all while becoming the youngest quarterback in NFL history to win a playoff game. His efforts did not go unnoticed, earning him the coveted Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
Setting Higher Standards
With a season under his belt, Stroud is focusing on enhancing his understanding and control of the game. "There's a ton of things. Owning the offense more, the operation. Putting more on my plate with run checks and protection checks, things like that," he explained. This maturity and willingness to take on additional responsibilities are reflective of his determination to lead by example.
Stroud is not just building his own skills but is also working to foster a cohesive and motivated team environment. "Right now it's just trying to not only build the camaraderie, but also be a leader with the first team so the second and third and everybody who's watching that this is the standard. It's up to me to set that standard and I have to do that every day," he emphasized.
The Texans have bolstered their roster during the offseason, adding proven talents like wideout Stefon Diggs and running back Joe Mixon. These additions have made Houston a favorite to clinch the AFC South once again. The expectations are high, and Stroud acknowledges the need to stay focused on the fundamental goals. "The message is just keep the main thing, the main thing. Of course, we have not only a lot of expectations, we have a lot of big goals on this team. That's how it should be," he stated.
Aiming for the Ultimate Prize
While last season's accomplishments have set a high bar, Stroud and the Texans are setting their sights even higher. With aspirations of a Super Bowl LIX appearance, the pressure is undoubtedly mounting. Yet, Stroud remains grounded and driven. "You know, the person that always doubts himself will probably never make it, so you have to have confidence and a goal and a plan and execute that plan," he declared with resolve.
As the team advances through training camp, Stroud is fully aware of the immediate tasks at hand. "Really you need to be where your feet are. We're in training camp right now. We've got to just execute that and making sure we're taking every day to get better," he noted.
The itch for victory is prominent in Stroud’s mindset, encapsulating the essence of competition. "You win, you move on, so that's the goal from start to finish," he aptly summarized. This straightforward yet powerful ideology permeates the Texans' approach as they brace for what promises to be an enthralling season.
As Stroud continues to develop both as a player and a leader, Houston supporters have ample reasons for optimism. With a fortified lineup and a quarterback committed to excellence, the Texans are poised to be a formidable force in the upcoming season.
