Anaheim Ducks Revolutionize Local Game Broadcasts with Free Streaming and Traditional TV

The Anaheim Ducks are set to revolutionize their local game broadcasts for the upcoming season, opting for a blend of direct-to-consumer streaming and traditional local broadcasts. This significant shift in strategy is aimed at enhancing accessibility for fans throughout the Ducks' TV market.

In a move designed to cater to a broad audience, 65 of the Ducks' games next season will be available over-the-air on an established channel in Los Angeles. Complementing this, all games will be accessible regionally via the Victory+ streaming service. Remarkably, this service will be free of charge for viewers, supported financially through advertising. The Victory+ app, designed to reach a wide range of devices including smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones, will be available for download starting in September.

“We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air) will see locally broadcast games free of charge,” stated Aaron Teats, Ducks president. This inclusive approach is a deliberate effort to ensure that fans across the Anaheim Ducks' extensive regional territory—which spans Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii—can engage with the team’s broadcasts without financial barriers.

Engaging with Fans

The Ducks' decision marks the end of their broadcasting relationship with Diamond Sports Group, which was concluded at the end of the 2023-24 season. Diamond Sports Group, currently ensnared in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, had been responsible for broadcasting Ducks games for several years. However, with the company's financial troubles, the Ducks have opted for a new direction. This move is not just a response to the uncertain future of Diamond Sports Group, but also a strategic endeavor to elevate fan engagement.

“It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms,” added Aaron Teats. This reinforces the Ducks' commitment to bringing the sport to as many fans as possible, thereby nurturing a deeper connection with the community.

Maintaining Broadcast Quality

Despite the transition in broadcasting partners, fans can rest assured that the quality of the commentary team will remain steadfast. Brian Hayward and John Ahlers will continue to be the familiar voices guiding viewers through the highs and lows of Ducks games. Their retention is a testament to the Ducks' dedication to maintaining a high standard of broadcasting despite the upheavals and transitions.

This new broadcasting arrangement is facilitated by A Parent Media, a strategic partner brought on board by the Ducks. Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media, highlighted the Ducks' significant role in content coordination and emphasized the broad expertise of the Ducks' team president in broadcasting. “The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background,” he stated, underscoring the confidence behind this new venture.

The strategic shifts by the Ducks are indicative of broader trends within the NHL. For instance, the Florida Panthers are set to transition their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, and the Dallas Stars have also aligned with the Victory+ streaming platform for regional broadcasts. Meanwhile, Diamond Sports Group, despite its financial woes, retains broadcasting rights for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season and maintains agreements with major league teams such as the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA).

As the Ducks forge ahead with this new broadcasting strategy, they are poised to set a precedent in regional sports media. This innovative approach hinges on the fundamental goals of enhancing fan engagement and providing unparalleled accessibility. Whether through over-the-air broadcasts on Channel 13 or free streaming on the Victory+ platform, Ducks fans can anticipate a seamless and enriched viewing experience. In aligning their broadcasting strategy with technological advancements and market trends, the Ducks reaffirm their commitment to their fans, ensuring every game is just a click—or a tune—in away.
