Breaking Barriers: Jessica Campbell Joins Seattle Kraken Coaching Staff
In a historic move, the Seattle Kraken have appointed Jessica Campbell to their coaching staff, making her the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in the NHL’s history. Campbell’s groundbreaking appointment follows an impressive coaching career that spans roles in both women's and men's hockey.
Campbell’s journey to the NHL is a testament to her dedication and prowess in the sport. Her coaching career gained significant traction when she stepped onto the bench as an assistant coach with the Coachella Valley Firebirds. During her time there, she managed the Firebirds’ power play and played a crucial role in player development.
One player who benefitted immensely from Campbell’s coaching is Tye Kartye. Under her guidance, Kartye won the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for most outstanding rookie, scoring 20 points (11 goals, nine assists) over 77 games for the Kraken. "During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire," said Kraken coach Dan Bylsma. "I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level."
Campbell’s coaching milestones extend beyond the professional leagues in North America. In 2022, she became the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL), an accomplishment that set the stage for her NHL breakthrough. She also made waves internationally, becoming the first woman to coach a men's national team during the 2022 IIHF Men's World Championship with Team Germany. There, she honed her skills further, even working with Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer.
Her pioneering spirit was evident early in her career. During the 2014-15 season, Campbell served as team captain in the first-ever CWHL All-Star Game. This leadership role showcased her ability to inspire and guide her teammates, a trait that has undoubtedly contributed to her successful transition into coaching.
Jessica Campbell’s appointment to the Seattle Kraken coaching staff is not just a personal achievement but a significant moment in the history of hockey. "I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be -- it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization," Campbell reflected on her new role.
One of her primary responsibilities with the Kraken will likely be to head the team’s power play, leveraging her expertise and experience from her time with the Firebirds. Given her track record of success, both the players and the organization are poised to benefit from her innovative approach to coaching.
Adding to the excitement for the Kraken is the signing of 2024 Stanley Cup champion Brandon Montour. The combination of Campbell’s fresh perspective and Montour’s championship experience could prove to be a game-changer for Seattle.
Jessica Campbell’s approach to coaching is rooted in continuous improvement and hard work. "For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal," Campbell emphasized. This growth mindset is likely to inspire not just her colleagues but the players who will now have the privilege to work with her.
Her philosophy resonates well with the broader team objectives. "I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is," Campbell stated.
Campbell’s appointment comes at a time when the NHL is increasingly recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusivity. Her role with the Kraken is a milestone that underscores the league’s evolving landscape and commitment to providing opportunities based on merit and dedication.
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on the Seattle Kraken to see how this historic hiring decision will impact the team’s performance. Jessica Campbell’s journey is far from over, and her story will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration for many aspiring coaches, regardless of gender, striving to make their mark in the world of professional sports.
